Independent films usually lack budgets and distribution, thereby becoming a large financial risk. High Definition can lower that risk in several ways. First and foremost is cost. Film Stock, Developing, Dailies, Sound Sync & Color Correction are just some of the additional expenses that Film incurs over H.D. You can playback takes and review lighting and other aspects immediately without the processing of film. Editing of H.D. over Film is also much cheaper. Once a distribution deal has been finalized, a 35mm film print can be made from this format for theatrical release. It lowers a lot of the financial risks on a picture that may never find a buyer. 

On the complete flip side of budgets, George Lucas has found H.D.'s qualities so attractive that he's used it entirely in the shooting of his latest Star Wars Episode "Attack of the Clones".
